Adjectives & Adverbs

Adjectives & Adverbs
The Adjectives & Adverbs unit will require students to:
  • define adjective- An adjective is a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun.
  • define adverb- An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
  • recognize adjectives and adverbs in a sentence
  • identify adjectives and adverbs in their own writing
Adjectives and Adverbs can be found in Chapter 18 in your textbook (p.380)
Questions adjectives answer:
1. What Kind?
2. Which one?
3. How many?
4. How much?
Questions adverbs answer:
1. Where?
2. When?
3. In what way?
4. To what extent?
  • Remember that definite/indefinite articles (the/a/an) are considered adjectives.
  • Possessives are regarded as adjectives (answers "which one?").  This includes possessive personal pronouns such as my, your, his, her, its, our, and their.
  • Indefinite and demonstrative pronouns can also be used as adjectives.
Adjective Procedure
Things to remember:
  • An adjective is a word that modifies a noun or pronoun. (not a conjunction, verb, adverb, preposition etc..)
  • Adjectives answer one of 4 questions; 1. What Kind? 2. Which one? 3. How many? 4. How much? about the word they are modifying.
  • What’s in the prepositional phrase, stays in the prepositional phrase

Example Sentence: Despite the bitter cold the shaggy dog skated across the frozen pond even though it was sad about the bright fire it left by a man’s cabin.
  1. Place parentheses around prepositional phrases: (Despite the bitter cold) the shaggy dog skated (across the frozen pond) even though it was sad (about the bright fire) it left (by a man’s cabin).

  1. Circle all articles- a, an, the: (Despite the bitter cold) the shaggy dog skated (across the frozen pond) even though it was sad (about the bright fire) it left (by a man’s cabin).

  1. Look inside the prepositional phrase to see if there are any words modifying the object of the preposition (which is a noun or pronoun). Circle them because they are adjectives: (Despite the bitter cold) the shaggy dog skated (across the frozen pond) even though it was sad (about the bright fire) it left (by a man’s cabin).

  1. Locate verbs- be especially careful to note linking verbs: (Despite the bitter
